I received notification this morning that the CPW Cherry Creek walleye spawning operation wrapped up yesterday. It started slow but the last couple of days were really solid. CPW was able to collect 119.5 million walleye eggs between Pueblo and Cherry Creek. WAY TO GO!!! The CPW staff and volunteers put a tremendous amount of effort into the walleye spawning effort - if you’re a walleye angler and see any of the people involved with them give them a “Thank You”. I tip my cap to all those involved!
With the conclusion of the spawning operation at Cherry Creek, the dam closure is now lifted. CPW staff will be working to remove the signs and buoys as soon as possible. The removal of the closure provides an opportunity for anglers to catch the tail end of the walleye spawn at Cherry Creek. Remember when fishing during the spawn to practice selective harvest, if you want to keep a few fish for a meal keep the smaller fish and let the bigger fish go. Good luck to those anglers heading out there!
